The drought is over - for now at least.
Living in South Texa you get used to the "feast or famine" nature of rain. Some years there is scarce little water in the reservoirs and communities anxiously await rain to water the parched land. Other years conversation about the exact dimensions of a "cubit" begin afresh.
This looks to be one of those years where we might study the Noah story and see what we can glean about that elusive unit of measurement, a cubit!
There is this little dance that goes on between abundance and scarcity in our environmental life. Some years there is an abundance of water and therefore growth and fruit. Other years the scarcity can become frighteningly overwhelming. And yet we dance the dance and we seem to always get what we need for whatever time we need it.
The spiritual dimensions of this are important. There are days in our lives where we feel the watering of the Holy Spirit filling us up. We read and hear clearly the message of Scripture. We feel close to God. We are able to respond to His call without any reservation or concern. We know that no matter what the world around us may say, God is taking care of every aspect of our life.
We also have times of spiritual drought. We feel far away from God. We cannot make heads nor tails of the Scripture we hear or read. We do not have any clarity what our next step should be. We worry about our lives, "what we will eat, what we will wear" to paraphrase Jesus. (Matthew 6)
We are indeed fortunate to live in South Texas. The rhythm of our drought and rain cycles is a reminder that every drought is followed by an abundance of rain to fill up our reservoirs. We know that we will have the precious water of life to sustain us and those around us. We know that there will be a time of growth and fruit.
And we also learn that every time of rain and abundance will be followed by a time of dryness and scarcity. This is not a bad thing, it is merely a part of the dance of abundance.
There is an abundance of rain falling outside my office window today. Our drought is over.
May the Holy Spirit open up the Heavens and rain upon you the water which leads to Eternal Life and take away any spiritual dryness you may be experiencing that there may be growth and fruit in your life!
